Greetings,
This week we are pouring a trio of wines that have little in common except that they are all very drinkable (modest in alcohol), versatile, well priced reflect the place they come from; simple as that.
2011 Jean-Paul Brun Beaujolais Blanc (Chardonnay) $17.99
Brun is known for his fantastic Beaujolais but what many people don't know is that he makes killer "white" Beaujolais. It is 100% chardonnay made in a style that those of you who do not like chardonnay will like; crisp, fresh, minerally and with no oak. A 12% alcohol and with Brun's minimal use of sulfur you can drink this wine all night long.
2012 Rousseau Frères Touraine Noble Joué $17.99
From one of the Loire Valley's smallest appellation, Touraine Noble Joué, comes this unique and delicious version of rosè. It's a blend of the three Pinot grapes, blanc, gris and noir which gives the wine a delightful combination of red fruit and peach in both the aroma and the mouth. It's lower in alcohol than most southern French rosés and shows a refreshing fruity character that makes it ideal with fish, salads, and dishes with a bit of heat. Consistently one of our favorites.
2011 Ca Rugate Valpolicella Rio Albo $14.99
Slowly but surely, thanks to producers like Ca Rugate, Americans are learning of the pleasures of quality Valpolicella and the corvina grape. There is a drinkability to this wine that gives it a wider appeal than many better known, but more austere, Italian reds, with a nice tart berry quality and a hint of cocoa. The finish is dry but not bitter, making the wine suitable for straightforward cuts of meats, cured meats, filled pastas and maybe even some seafood dishes with tomato, garlic and other pronounced flavors.
